2010 Season:
17th January to
30th September.
Water Height:
As of Wednesday 25th August at 7 inches on the gauge. The little
rise that came at weekend was not enough to create any excitement among fish in
the river. The rain that was forecast for today did not materialise and the
long-term forecast is for a dry spell.
Despite the low water there
have been seen running the river but they are
described as uncatchable in their present mood.
Most
anglers even the worm men have abandoned the river at this point
waiting for some change to come over the fish or water height. The more
optimistic anglers believe that there is a good head of fish building up with
the hope that September might be some good.
The only chance of
a pull is on a warm overcast evening when one of the resident fish might oblige.
Other than that pray for rain.
Draft Nets: The
Draft Nets at Killorglin closed last Saturday but unfortunately the fishery at Cromane is going to go on until the 30th August.
Anglers will be seeing Cromane Wild Salmon for sale signs into September
this year. This commercial harvest seriously limits anglers opportunities to a season of 4 weeks. This is hardly fair
treatment for anglers who are expected to pay a Salmon Conservation Stamp along
with the cost of their licence as well as all the other costs associated with
being a salmon angler.
First Fish of 2010!!!
Tommy Hurley
of Tralee caught a beautiful fish of 7 lbs at Johnston's on the worm on
Wednesday 21st
April.
Second Fish of 2010!!!
Thomas Ward
of
Tralee caught the second fish of the season on Laune Anglers waters on Monday
26th April fishing Crowley's. Caught on a 1.5 inch minnow the fish weighed 8 lbs.
Permits:
The cost of daily permits is reduced on Laune Anglers waters up to the end of
July also there is a reduced cost for 7 day Permits, see
Permits.
Comments:
The Laune is a
lake-fed river and therefore always fishable to the fly, even in prolonged dry
conditions.
High water levels -- as experienced in the Spring -- favour upriver fisheries,
as salmon tend to run the river on their way to the lakes.
Good water levels – not too high – are welcomed by anglers for the months of
August and September. The Gauge opposite shows the river at Summer Low.
